Colonialism is a difficult dish to digest. For Puerto Ricans, it has become the “daily special”, a reality that remains present and crosses all the political, economic, and sociocultural facets of the island.
Puerto Rican printmaker, painter, and educator Javier Moreno demonstrates in this exhibition a commitment of resistance to the colonial acts of the United States on Puerto Rico. The artist reminds us of the need for protest art against colonial activity in the island.
The artist points out and denounces the different sectors and precursors that have oppressed, ignored, and violated Puerto Ricans throughout history. Through his painting and engraving techniques, Moreno shows us the intersectionality of Puerto Rico's "status" problem and inspires us to use the arts as a tool for social engagement.
The exhibition prompts us to reflect on the narratives of resistance, struggle, and resilience that embody the Puerto Rican experience. The artworks encourage us to bring attention to our history and current reality, serving as a call to action and a source of outrage over the daily disruptions we face while living in a colony.
