How can one stage the mind? The experimental performance piece Preliminal offers a response. Based on the research, The Liminality of Mental Spaces: The Search for a Pre-liminal Methodology, Liam Gómez brings to the stage an immersive experience that seeks to explore thought spaces, transdisciplinarity, and ADHD through the lens of performance. Preliminal: The Exhibition positions us within a visual journey, showcasing—through documentation, conceptualization, and scenic design—the collective artistic efforts that made this piece possible.

The exhibition features a series of documentary photographs by artist Abimar Colón-Martínez, taking us behind the scenes into the rehearsal processes of the work. Through her photographs, a narrative of the project's core pillars emerges, capturing movement, liminality, the performance environment, mentality, and the transmission that performance generates.

Also on view is a series of sketches created by the scenic production artists Alondra Díaz, Gabriela Oquendo, Génesis Couvertier, Sebastián Román Soto, and Jayling Drowne-Rodríguez, who took on the task of translating these concepts into a design that transformed the space. The production resulted in a large, light-reactive mural that brought a new atmosphere to the Julia de Burgos Theater at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus.

Additionally, the exhibition includes digitized pages from the director’s notebook, offering a glimpse into the mind of director Liam Gómez and revealing the creative process behind the formation and construction of Preliminal, featuring performances by Claribel Torres, Jannisse Hernández, María Alicea, and Yadiel Vispo.

This exhibition invites us to rethink performance spaces and creative processes, offering an example of the intersections between disciplines and the potential for growth that emerges when we allow the mind to lose itself in its own movements, explore its spaces, and embrace the chaos that fuels the imagination.
